"Last Summer with Oscar," a new book written by forensic behavioral scientist Jan Schwartz, Ph.D., narrates the adventurous, true life story of a nine-year old Golden Retriever's response to cancer. After learning the severity of Oscar's diagnosis, Jan and her husband ruled out standard treatment options such as surgery and chemotherapy for this gentle-natured golden. Instead, they chose to celebrate the life and spirit of their beloved pet each day left with him.
Then, surprisingly, Oscar began eating Slippery Elm leaves. With Oscar leading the way, Jan's curiosity about Slippery Elm leaves marks the beginning of their exploration and discovery of little-known cancer remedies. The book details the events and happenings with both scientific precision and heartfelt spiritual insights.
The goodness of the journey elicited unusual kindnesses, exceptional measures of helpfulness and perfectly timed suggestions from others. Displaying profound will and courage, a much adored Golden Retriever named Oscar reveals truths about cancer treatment that may impact veterinary science for years to come. Indeed, a post-mortem biopsy indicated a most surprising result.
Then ten appendices at the end of the book provide information regarding all of the remedies used, and these complete the final section of the book.
The story inspires love and a true belief in the potential of humanity.

What a truly amazing and heartwarming book. The love and devotion that Jan and Richard showed for their dog Oscar was incredible. I became interested in this book because I recently had to put down a cat who suffered from cancer for three months. I wanted to see what I could have learned from reading the remedies that Jan and Richard applied to their dog Oscar. I was amazed that they were able to keep Oscar alive so long and was able to come up with such a variety of meals to keep Oscar's appetite up. The research they did on discovering supplements that helped to slow down the cancer and keep Oscar leading a good quality of life for so many months was truly amazing. Anyone that has dog, or cats for that matter will love this book. It will help show pet owners what can be done to prolong their pet's life and provide them with a good quality of life. My hats off to Jan and Richard for the love they had for Oscar as well as their other dog Winston.Dick Blanchard

Last Summer with Oscar edition by Jan Schwartz Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
Jan Schwartz has written a memoir that combines the detail of a scientist with the doting care of a sincere dog lover. She weaves a story that calls the reader into a world of struggle - struggle to save the lives of dear close friends.
In this case it is the lives of Oscar, her Golden and his brother, Winston. Not only is this a story of a warm, quirky, and devoted pet owner seeking remedies and detailing her passioned work to extend life, but it is a psychological blueprint for any of our work with any loved one who is suffering. We seek to comfort, to nourish, to research ways to expand our knowledge of how to make things whole. And we learn to say goodbye.
Jan gave us a view of a highly personal therapy, one that goes beyond the distance set between the healer and the patient. And through this effort, aided by her meticulous documentary story telling style, she may have given us insight into breakthrough therapies and how they work.
Jan's book is a wonderful gift idea for dog-loving friends. This is quite a revealing and courageous work by this writer, and worth reading, and for having remedy ideas ready on the shelf next to your medicinal, herb remedy, and cook books.

A truly touching memoir of a difficult time in the lives of two people who felt deeply about their four legged family member.
Anyone who has loved a pet can appreciate the sacrifices made with pure love.
Jan s writing.....heartfelt. And engaging.
This is a great story about dog owners dedicated to supporting their loving pet through a very difficult time. Lots of love and valuable information if you have pets and want only the best for them.
"Last Summer with Oscar" is a detailed book, though not meaning lengthy, by Jan Schwartz about the efforts of her and her husband to find alternative methods of treating their Golden Retriever for gastrointestinal cancer. This was in lieu of permitting their beloved dog to go through the torture that is chemotherapy, knowing that even chemotherapy would not ultimately cure the dog. Oscar himself led them to their first discoveries, beginning to devour slippery elm leaves on their property and turning them toward their first discoveries about alternative, natural elements for curing cancer. As one who always has questioned the "cut, poison and burn" methods for fighting cancer, which also kill immune cells, I found the book to be an eye opener. It is detailed because Schwartz, a forensics scientist among other academic accomplishments, is meticulous in maintaining a record of the treatment and care of Oscar. But the detail is important in this story, because the only hope for the dog was its diet as the veterinarian had told them, these dogs usually die within 60 days because they cannot eat.
